AI Content Policy
This policy is designed to keep humans at the center of the Lemonade community. It is built on the first principle that if a human wants another human to spend time reading and understanding something, then they need to write it themselves.
Goals
The maintainers of this project make every effort to read and understand the prose you send us. We want to reserve this effort for genuine human ideas and connections, rather than spending it on a high volume (both quantity and length) of AI-generated prose.
[!NOTE] This policy is an experiment. 30 days after it is introduced we will evaluate whether we want to keep, modify, or drop it.
Rule 1
No human involved in this project should expect any other human to read AI-generated prose.
AI prose is not permitted in any Issue, Discussion, PR body, PR comment, or Discord message. Anyone, at any time, for any reason, may cite Rule 1 to request that a human replace any AI prose with human-authored prose. The person who posted the AI prose should not expect any further replies until the replacement is done.
Note: "prose" refers to sentences and paragraphs posted in a communications channel. Things that are not prose include: code (including comments), diagrams, tables, graphics, etc.
Note: AI tools that operate by posting their feedback directly to the PR are an exception to this rule, however nobody other than the person who invoked the agent is expected to read its output. Examples:
@claude review this, assigning copilot as a reviewer, or codex's auto-review on newly opened PRs.
Additional Policies
Contributors can use AI tools, however you are fully responsible for the code and prose you submit.
AI Coding
If you use AI-assisted coding, please make sure that you:
- Understand the generated code before submitting it.
- Review the full diff yourself.
- Remove unrelated or unnecessary changes.
- Test the result locally where possible.
AI can make it easy to generate large changes, but large or unfocused changes are harder for maintainers to review and are less likely to be accepted quickly.
AI Code Review
Use of AI code review tools is strongly encouraged, however the human is responsible for understanding the AI's output, improving the signal-to-noise ratio by filtering to what is important, and then rewriting their output in their own words.
AI Reporting
AI is extremely useful for finding/reporting bugs and performing other complex analysis tasks over a large codebase like Lemonade. You are encouraged to use AI for analysis and reporting as part of your own work. However, you must synthesize your findings and write them in your own words if you want another human to read them.
AI Chat and Brainstorming
How you come up with your ideas is up to you, but you must hand-write the prose you post and you are responsible for it once you post it.
